In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the demand for data storage is skyrocketing. As a result, investors and regional electricity companies are actively seeking ways to save energy, reduce costs, and minimize carbon emissions on a global scale. This urgency is further amplified by the advent of cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Vietnam, with its competitive electricity prices ($/kWh) and favorable water charges, coupled with the government's provision of various investment tax reliefs, has emerged as an attractive destination for data center investors. However, these investors often require substantial amounts of energy. To address this, EVN has strategically arranged for the availability of power from the national grid through dedicated high-tech parks located in the north, central, and south of the country, utilizing 110/22kV substations.

Several data centers designed and constructed in Vietnam have been recognized and awarded Tier ratings by the esteemed Uptime Institute, ranging from Tier I to III. However, as the power requirements for data services continue to surge, particularly with the recent introduction of AI tools, it is imperative that data centers are designed with utmost efficiency in terms of reliable power supply and cooling systems.

While many regional governments are investing in sustainable solutions, such as wind turbines, these sources unfortunately do not offer the necessary reliability for a network. This underscores the criticality of designing data centers with dedicated standby power and bulk fuel storage arrangements, especially for Tier 3 rated data centers that are obligated to ensure an impressive 99.982% uptime, allowing for no more than 1.6 hours of downtime per year.

What the Data Center  Client Needs - 

Today, it is expected by both ISP and Telco stakeholders that data centers must have the most efficient MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) plant and equipment, achieving a minimum Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.5. PUE is a metric used to measure the energy efficiency of a data center. It is calculated by dividing the power entering a data center by the power used to operate the computer infrastructure within it. PUE is expressed as a ratio, with higher efficiency indicated by a lower quotient approaching 1. The Green Grid, an industry group dedicated to data center energy efficiency, developed the concept of PUE.

Data center infrastructure efficiency (DCIE) is the reciprocal of PUE and is expressed as a percentage that improves as it approaches 100%. This drives the overall design of data centers, encompassing architectural, structural, and MEP considerations, which should align with the guidelines established by LEED. By adhering to LEED, the Green Building Movement presents an opportunity to address critical challenges such as climate change, reliance on unsustainable and costly energy sources, and threats to human health. Incorporating LEED principles is an essential element in creating a sustainable built environment for all.
